Love Locks

Mingle with the universe, and feel

One of the best parts of traveling as a couple, is that you get to spend uninterrupted time with the person you love the most in the world. And, not to get all Love Actually on you, but it seems like the world agrees with me, because places to put love locks are cropping up all over the world. In case you haven’t run across one of these sites yet, it generally works like this: lovers put their name on a padlock, then attach it to the railings of a romantic place, like the Via dell’Amore in Cinque Terre, or the Pont des Artes in Paris, to symbolize their unbreakable love.

We placed our love lock from MakeLoveLocks in Brooklyn in Byron’s Grotto in Portovenere, Italy. Portovenere is named for the ancient temple of Venus which once stood on it’s rocky coast, and it was a favorite place for the Romantic poets Byron and Shelley. Bryron’s Grotto is a dramatic inlet filled with crashing, hypnotic waves where the poet meditated during his time in the region.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.

(Childe Harold, Canto IV, Verse 178 – Lord Byron, George Gordon)

We couldn’t think of a more wildly romantic or perfect place to put our love lock.

If you’d like to purchase a love lock of your own, we highly recommend MakeLoveLocks. It is the perfect gift for a birthday, Valentine’s day or a wedding. You don’t have to lock it to a bridge halfway around the world either – I can’t think of a sweeter way to lock up your bike or gym locker.

  1. I could just kick myself for not leaving a love at Via dell’Amore in Cinque Terre. I suppose it is the perfect reason for a revisit 🙂

We didn’t on our first visit either – so we brought a lock this time – but the Via dell’Amore was closed for repairs! Luckily we stumbled across Bryon’s Grotto, which is equally breathtaking. <3

  2. Lovely idea. We’ve seen many places to put love locks, but are yet to do so ourselves. I’m a complete sucker for all things over-the-top-romantic. I love the idea of putting a lock somewhere simple that you see everyday!
