De Stadskantine
Coffee and Croissants, Beer and Broodjes in Amsterdam
You know the type of food you want, but you can’t put it to words. You don’t want fast food, nor do you want to go to a restaurant and sit down. Cafes are for lingering; you just want a quick bite to eat and maybe a beverage to wash it all down. Basically, you want to go to your kitchen and grab something. The problem is that your kitchen is back home and you are not definitely not home. You are in Amsterdam. Specifically, the de Pijp neighborhood south of the canal ring. Luckily for you, there is a place that serves up deceptively simple, fresh food most of the hours of the day. And they have plenty of things to drink, too.
De Stadskantine is a restaurant that serves food and drink all day long, and there is no need to wait for a table or waitress. When you walk in head to the counter and place your order. (The menus are on the wall.) For breakfast, treat yourself to coffee, tea, juice or a smoothie and a croissant with cheese and salmon. For lunch or supper, stop in and get a sandwich with a beer or a glass of wine. After you pay, grab a seat at one of the tables or at the counter and wait for your order to be brought out. If you are in a hurry, you have already paid so you can leave when you have finished. If you are not in a hurry, and we sincerely hope that is the case, you can enjoy your meal or snack while looking out the large windows at the Amsterdam streets.
