Comet Cafe
Slow food on Milwaukee’s East Side
Comet Cafe’s logo is a Rabbit, but don’t let their speedy mascot fool you. They, like their sister cafe Honeypie, serve slow food sourced from local purveyors. And sure, slow food can mean long lines, but the staff makes you feel right at home as you wait for a spot. Grab an Anodyne coffee or a bloody from the bar (beer chaser included of course—this is Milwaukee, after all) and absorb the vintage ambience as you ogle the cupcakes in the bakery case.
The booths are big and comfy, and they also have seating at the bar, diner style.
The pancakes are truly phenomenal. These fluffy behemoths cover an entire dinner plate, and come with real Wisconsin maple syrup. They are huge! (And perfect for sopping up a hangover)
(For the record. I finished half a pancake.)
Their attention to detail extends beyond food. Take a look at this drinks menu. Each beer and drink has it’s own baseball-style card. The cooks and waitstaff also get cards, too. How cool is that?
Know before you go
The wait can be long. Comet is open Monday-Thursday from 10am-2am, Friday 10am-2:30am, Saturday 9am-2:30am, Sunday 9am-2am.
Bottom line
Worth the wait. Go hungry.
