English cuisine has a lot of stereotypes assigned to it, but the one we can all agree on is that food, like pretty much everything else in England, is expensive. Vacation budgets should be used to eat food, not be eaten up by food, so in England, it becomes a bit of a challenge to find a place that provides delicious, quality food at a modest price, even when you are paying for them in pounds and pence.
The Standard has been serving delicious Indian cuisine in Oxford’s Jericho neighborhood for over 40 years. The cozy little restaurant offers quality food at great prices, all served to you in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu is pretty extensive, so if you need help deciding, ask your server. Their curry, tandoori and rice dishes have plenty of vegetarian options as well as levels of spiciness. They offer a selection of beers and wine, but why not try the mango lassi? If you still want a beer, Kingfisher washes down naan bread nicely.
(n.b. We were so famished that we didn’t take a single photo of the food while we were eating – bad bloggers! But trust us, the food here is amazing)
The Standard is open from 12pm to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to 11pm Sunday through Thursday, from 5:30pm to 11:30pm on Friday and from 12pm to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to 11:30pm on Saturday. They are located across the street from the Phoenix cinema.
If you have had your fill of pricey English pub grub, this is the ideal place to go.
