A World Class Collection of Art

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is like an art history textbook come to life. The collection includes 80,000 objects spanning 5,000 years, and the work on display is perfectly curated, leading visitors on an entertaining and informative tour of art through the ages.

The museum has a particularly nice collection of paintings, featuring heavy hitters from renaissance to contemporary eras including Rembrandt,

Van Gogh,

Larry Rivers,

and Chuck Close.

They also have fascinating collections of decorative arts and material culture,

including entire period rooms from a variety of cultures.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the MIA. Despite the large number of objects on display, the museum never seems overwhelming. Each piece is carefully considered and intelligently displayed. And the rooms have down to earth and, dare we say it, often amusing descriptions. We also loved the “Art ReMix” pieces, which are juxtapositions of contemporary and historical art, that are scattered throughout the museum.
