You know how much we love to drink beer here at L&A headquarters, but once in a while we like to mix it up – so after a great dinner at the Avenue Bar, we headed over to the Old Sugar Distillery to try some spirits created right here in Madison.
The distillery, housed in an old industrial building on Main Street, turns into a tasting room on Thursday & Friday from 4-10pm and Saturday from 12-10pm.The inside is filled with distilling equipment straight out of a Bosch painting, and oak barrels filled with rum (it is, after all, a working distillery), but there are plenty of places to sit, and the crowd is mellow. Belly up to the shining, old school bar and try a Dark & Stormy, made with their flagship Cane and Abe Freshwater Rum – or a Gringo, horchata gussied up with Honey Liqueur. While you’re up there, chat up the bartenders. They’re super knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions about how their products are made.
In addition to their Rum & Honey Liqueur, Old Sugar Distillery also makes Grappa, Ouzo, Whiskey and Brandy in limited edition batches. For eats, they have a cheese and sausage plate-a Wisco favorite. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, the Avenue Bar is not far.
Tours are available, shoot them an email to set one up. If you want to buy a bottle (or two!) make sure you arrive before 9pm – you can’t buy alcohol after that time in Madison.
Some of the most amazing spirits you’ll ever try. Great atmosphere.
