Cocomama Hostel

Your Headquarters for a perfect Amsterdam trip

Cocomama is billed as “Amsterdam’s First Boutique Hostel,” and it truly is a one-of-a-kind place to stay. Located in the hip-yet-homey De Pijp neighborhood, Cocomama is not your average hostel. Once a notorious brothel, the property has been recently renovated into the perfect Amsterdam crash pad. Designy details delight discerning travelers, such as exposed wood beams and retro appliances, and out back lies a tranquil garden that is completely hidden from the street.

The friendly staff and Joop the cat make you feel at home from the moment you walk through the door. Each of the rooms has a Dutch-related theme. We stayed in the Delft room, which had clean white lines, blue accents and was decorated with Delftware. The room and en suite bathroom were spotless. (Cocomama also has private doubles, but those book up fast!)

Bathroom at CocoMama Hostel, Amsterdam If you don’t need or want a private room, the dorms and common spaces at Cocomama are perfect for making new friends. The living room and kitchen are bright, comfortable and stocked with games, movies and a €1 honor bar. It’s the perfect place to spend a rainy Amsterdam evening. (Joop likes to pose for photos.) Cocomama also hosts movie nights and other activities for guests. They also rent authentic Dutch bikes for only €5! (Authentic means a plain black fixie with no rental decals or helmet.) The front desk crew also has fabulous restaurant recommendations, so be sure and ask!

Know before you go

The hostel is located close enough to the city center to be within walking distance, but far enough from it to be clean, comfortable and quiet. Book early if you need or want a private room. Ditto goes for bikes. So comfortable you might not want to leave. Towels are €1.

Bottom line

This hostel strikes the perfect balance between home and hotel. We can’t wait to stay there again! (BTW watch for more Cocomama hostels opening in NYC & Paris in the near future.)
