Canal Bike

The Best Way To See Amsterdam is By Water (Part 2)

(Part 1 is here, by the way)

Canal Biking viewsWhen people think of Amsterdam, images of bicyclists riding alongside the canals is the first thing that comes to mind. It did not take the Dutch long to combine their two favorite things into one awesome adventure: canal-biking. OK, this is probably what we would call a pedal-boat here in the US, but we love it all the same. This is your chance to pilot your very own boat on the canals of Amsterdam-something you can tell all of your jealous friends back home you did on vacation. Canal bikes (as they will henceforth be known) are rented by the Canal Company. You can pick one up at their locations near Rijksmuseum, Leidseplein, Anne Frank House/Wester Church and Keizersgracht/Leidsestraat-you can’t miss the signs. Prices for 2 people in a boat are 8 euros per person for an hour, 11 euros for an hour and a half 14 euros for 2 hours. Pick your time, pay your fee (plus a 20 euro deposit) and you are off!

Red Tug BoatAt first it can be intimidating, but remember, all you have to do to move is pedal. Want to stop? Quit pedaling. As far as control, there is a single lever to steer with. And when it comes to other boats, remember this simple rule: you are never first. Got it? Good. Pedal at any speed you like along the canals and enjoy the ride. The city really does look different from the water, so bring your camera and take lots of pictures.

Know Before You Go

It can be a little chilly on the water so dress appropriately. No boating experience is necessary.

Bottom Line

Canal-biking in Amsterdam? But of course!
