Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern

Cutting Cheese Since 1931

Landjaeger in Baumgartner's Cheese Store and TavernIf Fromagination is a slice of Paris plopped down in Madison, then Baumgartner’s is what you get when a Swiss village mates with a Wisconsin tavern – and we mean that in the best possible way.

The first time we visited Baumgartner’s was during the 2010 Green County Cheese Days. (A glorious celebration that occurs the 3rd weekend in September in even numbered years – so mark your calendars for 2012!) That’s when Kindra sampled her first (and only) Limburger sandwich. The last time we stopped, it was a gloomy Saturday afternoon in the middle of summer – but our spirits were lightened by arriving at Baumgartner’s just in time to witness a bride and groom’s first dance in the tavern. These cockles were warmed, I tell you!

Ryan in Baumgartner's Cheese Store and TavernOur spirits were further buoyed by the delicious selection of cheese at the front counter. Ask the cheesemonger for advice, he’ll be glad to talk about the intricacies of cheese with you – he gave us the perfect swiss – from one of the last wheel producers in the United States. It was amazing.

Know before you go:

Packed on weekends. Don’t fear the Swiss Apple – a limburger and onion sandwich – whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. Can’t make it there? Order online.

Bottom Line:

Cheese. Beer. What more do you need? Go there.
