One of the best places for coffee in Madison is the Victory. Located on Atwood Avenue on the East side, this tiny outfit on the corner of Corry Street serves up some big taste. Great coffee comes from great roasters and Victory’s source is Anodyne. With flavor this rich, we had to make a pilgrimage.
Anodyne Cafe is located on Milwaukee’s south side on Kinnickinnic Ave (KK if you want to sound like you know what you are talking about), and as a functioning coffee bean roaster/cafe, they caffeinate the hip neighborhood of Bayview. Inside, it has the layout of a brewery with a tasting room (hey, we know what we are talking about). You can belly up to the bar or just place your order and grab a place to sit. Seating options range from long tables to cozy chairs. Either way, there is plenty of room for you, your laptop (free Wi-Fi), your 20 oz latte and the latest issue of The Onion. Hidden (well, not quite) in the back is the coffee roasting operation and it only adds to the atmosphere. It feels as if you are an honored guest getting the privilege to peek behind the curtain to see just what makes this place tick. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and are willing to chat about coffee or just about anything else (especially the Brewers), so next time you are on Milwaukee’s southside (or actually anywhere in the 5 County area) stop in for latte, mocha or some beans to brew at home.
Anodyne is open from 6:30am to 9pm weekdays and from 7:30am to 9pm on weekends, so you can stop in here for some after dinner coffee before heading to any of the bars in the area (yes, there are plenty of bars in Bayview).
Was this coffee worth a 150 mile round trip? Yes. Yes it was.
