Albert Cuypmarket

The Largest Outdoor Market in the Netherlands

In 1905, in an attempt to organize the chaos of street vendors that had flooded to the streets of the city’s newest neighborhood, the Amsterdam city government created an open air market along Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp. At first, the market was just open on Saturday, but in 1912, the hours expanded to the current six days a week. Today, there are 260 stalls in the market operating along Albert Cuypstraat between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat.

The Albert Cuypmarkt has usual street market fare including antiques, clothing, leather products and jewelry, but the real draw is the food. Cheese, sausage, fresh vegetables and fruit and fish can all be found here as well as L&A’s favorites: stroopwafels and frites. Both are made to order and will burn your tongue because you will not let them cool. If you are feeling a little adventurous, be sure to try the pickled herring, served with onions and the national condiment of Holland: mayonnaise.

Know Before You Go

The market is open from 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday. It is quite a walk from Centraal station, so if you don’t have a bike, consider taking a tram. Coming from Amsterdam Central Station, you may take tram lines 4,16, 24 or 25 to get there.

Bottom Line

With both the Heineken Experience and the Rijksmuseum nearby, the Albert Cuypmarkt is a great place to wander through and grab a snack or do some shopping while you are in the area.
