21st Amendment Brewery and Restaurant

Brewery and Restaurant in San Francisco’s SoMa Neighborhood

21st Amendment BreweryOn December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted ending the Temperance Movement’s 14-year reign of terror. Following the passage of the 18th Amendment banning alcohol in 1919, the movement predicted that ridding society of alcohol would rid society of the ill effects caused by alcohol. What happened instead was an expansion of organized crime and corruption of public officials. Prohibition was a dismal failure and Americans were fed up; we were in a Great Depression and needed our Great Depressant to cope. As a side note, Wisconsin was the second state to ratify the Amendment (Michigan beat us to the punch).

Love and Adventure at the 21st Amendment Bar21st Amendment Brewery and Restaurant is located in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, just south of downtown. We found their beers at establishments all over the city and decided to visit the source for Kindra’s birthday. The restaurant has a large dining area and the menu offers sandwiches, pizza, steak, chicken and seafood, but the beer is the real draw. 21 Amendment offers a full line of brews, though the highlight was the Brew Free or Die IPA.

Know Before You Go

It is a 15 minute walk from downtown, though a map would have you believe it is further.

Bottom Line

Brew pub that makes this Wisconsin native proud.
